4 out of 5 stars Some good physics, but not much to write home about   July 4, 2010

I bought Rfactor only recently because I wanted to try its realistic physics engine and its reputation for an abundant user mod community. I later found out that Rfactor comes with only a handful of car models, and that most user mods are haphazard mods with different skins. I managed to identify some of the AWD cars (my main reason to try it, Richard Burns didn't offer a lot of sandbox play for its WRX STI) and the cars all get fake names to prevent licensing costs.

I did not particularly like the points/purse system. Race07 and GTR2 allowed sandbox play and did not penalize for doing stupid stuff or for trying different cars. The points system in Rfactor didn't make a lot of sense. Although the physics engine is supposed to be "one of the best", I didn't really feel it being a significant difference from GTR Evolution/Race 07 even when using my Logitech G27. Overall, I felt Rfactor is extremely spartan compared to Race07.

this game was too complicated for me to get working on my computer. There is too much stuff I need to download and I don't think its compatible with my computer.

4 out of 5 stars not a single player sim   March 22, 2010

The racing sim part of rfactor deserves 5 stars, but the single player "game" part of rfactor deserves 1 start. Let me explain.

rfactor really isn't designed for single player mode. It comes with a few fictional cars that can be raced on a few fictional tracks. The user is expected to mod the game adding tracks and cars created by other users. The AI is just plain terrible. I tweaked the config file a bit and improved it a little. The AI will ram your car off the track every chance it gets. It will always try to run the fastest possible line, even if you are in the way. It will not even realize you are there and just try to drive right through you. The AI doesn't use normal physics either. It can stop much faster than the player can and turn much faster. If you buy this game for single player use, you will be disappointed.

The Sim part of the game is amazing. Cars drive how you would expect them to. Graphics are top notch. You get everything you would expect out of a top notch driving sim. Its as good or better than anything out there, iracing, gtr2, gtr evo, or whatever you favorite sim is.

Multi-player works like this. Users design cars and tracks and then host servers. You need to figure out what tracks and cars you need in order to join the server. If you don't have the right car, you won't be able to join. rfactor leaves most of the work up to the users. I looked online to see if I could find a game but there was only a couple games that had players in them and I didn't have the right tracks and cars so I couldn't join. I was too lazy to figure out what I needed so I just jumped on iracing instead and ran some races there.

Rfactor has huge potential, but you need to know what your doing. If you are the type of person who loves racing online, and doesn't mind modding a game yourself, rfactor is for you. If you are lazy or lack the knowledge to mod a game, rfactor might disappoint you. If you don't even own an expensive force feedback racing wheel, what are you doing go play need for speed.

5 out of 5 stars As realistic as a driving experience can get. Beats Gran Turismo by FAR   February 23, 2010

Incredible car simulator. Squeaking brake discs, whining dogbox gears, amazing physics. Plus hundreds of tracks, cars, skins. What more can you ask for?

I have only recently begin to play with the racing games, but I just purchased a Logitech G25 Racing Wheel with the pedels and shifter, and rFactor was my first try.I think it is an outstanding racing sim.At one time I raced super stock cars, and this was as close to driving a car as I could imagine. It's a fun game.I have nothing but good things to say about it.It would make a great addition to anyones collection.
BIGEMANN!!
